Christ’s Sacrifice Once for All

Hebrews 10:1-18

10 For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near. Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins? But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said,

“Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body have you prepared for me;

in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure.

Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come to do your will, O God, as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.’”

When he said above, “You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings” (these are offered according to the law), then he added, “Behold, I have come to do your will.” He does away with the first in order to establish the second. 10 And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

11 And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. 14 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

15 And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying,

16 “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord:
I will put my laws on their hearts,
and write them on their minds,”

17 then he adds,“I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”

18 Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.

This past week as I was sitting in the Department of Driver Services a rush of emotions came over me.  Now I am sure you are thinking I got angry, aggravated, annoyed or frustrated.  While I did at some point feel these emotions it was another emotion that flooded over me – a feeling of thankfulness.

How could thankfulness come to mind while I sat in a chair for over 2 hours to renew my wife’s driver’s license?  As I sat, I began to consider and think about the sacrifice Jesus made on my behalf.  I think I will never get over the fact that Jesus Christ is my Savior.

For hundreds, even thousands, of years men have tried to devise ways to get to all-mighty God.  They have tried to work their way into God’s favor; tried to be a good enough person to deserve God’s forgiveness.  They have performed empty religious acts to prove they are worthy of God’s acceptance – all in a feeble effort to be just and righteous before God.

But Jesus once and for all made a way for every person, regardless of their past, to be made right before God.  We no longer must work for or worry about how our sins are forgiven.  They are forgiven through the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross.

So no matter what you are going through today – no matter if you want to pull your hair out waiting to renew your driver’s license – be thankful because Jesus Christ is the perfect sacrifice.  And through His blood our sins are forgiven and we can enjoy a relationship with God.

John 3:16-17

16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
